This book serves as a comprehensive guide for students in the 7th semester of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) program, focusing on various aspects of novel drug delivery systems. This book is divided into five units in following topics:
The Unit-I of this book introduces the concept of Controlled Drug Delivery Systems (CDDS), which play a crucial role in achieving optimized drug release profiles. Various mechanisms, such as sustained release, pulsatile release, and targeted release, are explored, providing insights into the design and formulation of CDDS.
The second part of this unit is on polymers, which are extensively utilized in drug delivery systems due to their versatile properties. The discussion encompasses different types of polymers, their characteristics, and their applications in drug delivery, including the development of polymeric nanoparticles, micelles, and hydrogels.
The Unit-II is divided in to three parts in which first part is on Microencapsulation, offers a valuable approach for protecting drug substances and achieving controlled release and the second part is on Mucosal Drug Delivery Systems are explored in the emphasizing the importance of alternative routes of drug administration. The third part is exploring on Implantable Drug Delivery Systems, which offer long-term and localized drug release. It delves into the design considerations, techniques, and applications of implantable drug delivery systems.
The Unit-III is divided in to three parts in which first part is on Transdermal Drug Delivery Systems (TDDS), offering a non-invasive approach for systemic drug delivery. Gastro-Retentive Drug Delivery Systems (GRDDS) are the focus in the second part addressing the challenges posed by the gastric environment and the need for sustained drug release. The chapter investigates various approaches, such as floating systems and muco-adhesive systems, highlighting their potential for improving drug absorption and bioavailability and the last part are covers Naso-pulmonary Drug Delivery Systems, which provide a direct route for drug administration to the respiratory system.
Targeted Drug Delivery Systems, the subject of the Unit-IV, offer precise and localized drug delivery to specific cells or tissues. The chapter delves into the principles of targeted drug delivery, including ligand-receptor interactions, nanocarriers, and stimuli-responsive systems, showcasing their potential for enhancing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing side effects.
The Unit-V is divided in to two parts in which first part is focuses on Ocular Drug Delivery Systems, addressing the challenges associated with drug delivery to the eye. Lastly, explores Intrauterine Drug Delivery Systems, emphasizing drug delivery to the uterus for various reproductive health applications. The chapter discusses the anatomical considerations, formulation strategies, and emerging technologies for intrauterine drug delivery.
